Eli Whitney Jr. was an American inventor widely known for his invention of gin, one of the key inventions of the Industrial Revolution that shaped the economy of Antebellum South. Whitney’s invention turned ephemeral cotton into a profitable crop, strengthening the economic foundations of slavery in the United States. Despite the social and economic impact of her invention, Whitney lost a lot of money in legal battles over patent infringement on gin. He then paid attention to securing government contracts to manufacture muskets for the new US Army. He continued to make weapons and invent until his death in 1825 .
